GTA 6 Pre-Load Guide: Be Playing the Second It Unlocks
How pre-loading works on PS5 and Xbox, when the download unlocks, how big it'll be, and the settings to check now so launch night isn't spent watching a progress bar.
Nothing hurts like watching a 100+ GB download crawl while the rest of the world is already cruising Ocean Drive. Pre-loading fixes that — your console downloads the encrypted game days early and unlocks it at the exact release minute.
Here's the complete checklist, updated as Rockstar confirms dates and file sizes.
The checklist
Free up 150 GB+ now — recent Rockstar titles have shipped near or above 100 GB, and day-one patches add more.
Digital pre-orders pre-load automatically once the window opens (typically 2–7 days before launch). Physical buyers: you'll still want the day-one patch downloaded, so leave your console in rest mode with automatic downloads enabled.
Check your auto-download setting today: PS5 → Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates. Xbox → Settings → Updates.
Launch-minute strategy
Global unlocks are usually simultaneous, timed to a single moment worldwide — see our release-time guide for your timezone. Restart your console 15 minutes before, close everything else, and you're in the first wave.
